This course is designed to give an overview of energy use in the home and how to manage it. It is ideal for trades people or individuals wishing to get involved in the home energy upgrade sector and those that wish to understand the issues around fuel poverty and energy consumption.

Purpose/Overall Learning

 The learner should be able  understand the factors contributing to fuel poverty and to be familiar with ways to address it. Know the specific types of heating and hot water systems available. Learn to use these systems efficiently, appropriately and safely
The learner should will also be able to advise on the appropriate and efficient use of energy and become familiar with the legislation / statutory requirements concerning consumption. Gain an insight into energy consumption in the home both electricity and heat. Learn how to measure and control this energy use. Understand zoning of heating systems and hot water circuits and learn how timers, zone valves, TRV’s and thermostats operate.

  • Energy terminology and units, Fuel cost comparison and energy sources.
  • Energy Monitoring measurement and consumption.
  • Heating controls and circuits.
  • SEAI funding and requirements for the smarter homes programme

Practical/Site Activities

Each candidate will be required to demonstrate a working knowledge of heating zone control by working on a demonstration system.
